KAI Expands Management Team with CFO and VP Research

South San Francisco, CA – March 15, 2005 – KAI Pharmaceuticals Inc., an emerging drug discovery and development company, announced today the appointments of Kristine Ball to the position of vice president of finance and chief financial officer and Stephen Harrison, Ph.D., to the position of vice president of research. In her new position at KAI, Ball will be responsible for finance and accounting, human resources, facilities, and investor relations. Dr. Harrison will be responsible for overseeing KAI’s efforts in core technology development, drug discovery, and pre-IND activities.

“Ball has over twelve years of experience in finance and accounting in the life science industry. Most recently, Ball served as vice president of finance at Exelixis, Inc., a publicly traded pharmaceutical company where she was instrumental in the transition of the company from a 150-person privately held company to a 600-person publicly traded company. While at Exelixis, Ball held the position of interim CFO from 2003 to 2004, was highly involved in several acquisitions, was involved in raising over $360 million in equity financings and debt, and managed the day-to-day finance, accounting, and SEC compliance activities. Prior to Exelixis, Ball was a senior manager in Ernst & Young’s life sciences practice.”

“Dr. Harrison brings to KAI a deep knowledge of drug discovery with an emphasis on kinases across multiple therapeutic areas. Most recently, Dr. Harrison was vice president of research at Thios Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a private biotech company focusing on developing products that target biological sulfation. Prior to Thios, he spent nine years at Chiron Corporation, where he advanced to the head of Chiron’s kinase program. At Chiron, Dr. Harrison oversaw target and lead identification, lead optimization, and project leaders for all kinase inhibitor research. He was also the director of small molecule drug discovery where he led all hit-to-lead projects and directed a team of 25 scientists. ”
